A few words from DJ Vajra, the day before his world DMC title ...
Tales From The Crate - It's your big return in the DMC competition, isn't it ?
DJ Vajra - That's right, it's been seven years since the last time I battled in DMC. First time I tried, I went to the US final, so this is my first time representing the United State here at the world finals.
TFTC - What about the US final this year ?
DJ Vajra - The US championship in New York this year was pretty crazy, very very high level of competition and greats DJ's. It was definitely an honour to be able to come on top in such of, you know, among so many greats competitors.
TFTC - You're gonna compete tomorow, what's your feeling the day before the competition ?
DJ Vajra - I have a lot of respect for the Dj's who are going to be in the competition tomorow. I made me friend with everybody right now. As far from being afraid or worried by anybody, I'm not really approaching like that. This is more, you know, just me doing a six minutes performance, it's really the only thing I'm concerned with, trying not to be concerned with what the judges think or what anybody else think except for doing what I wanna do and try to put on a show for the crowd.
TFTC - DJ Unkut gave up for medical reason. Many people was exciting by the clash of your two different styles, what about you ? Are you disappointed ?
DJ Vajra - You know, definitely, Unkut was a big motivation for me. I know a lot of people were really excited to see us gonna go at it. I was as well as anybody else. I'm really disappointed that he isn't going to compete but I wish him the best about his health and recovery.
Hopefully, we will get to do it again at some point on the road ...
TFTC - You're still in love with a classic Hip Hop style when a lot of DJ are working with electronic sounds. Is there something wrong between electronic music and you ?
DJ Vajra - I really like electronic music actually even if I definitely grew up listenning to Hip Hop since I was a little kid and that's a huge part of my style and always will be. But I do like electronic music quite a bit as well. When I play a set, I play a lot of Electro House and Dubstep and things like that.
You know I do have some electronic music incorporated in my set this year as well as like some Hip Hop, Funk, Rock and all my different styles of music. I feel like my set this year is not like one sound or one style, it's a kind of combination of all the different parts of music that I have been into, in six minutes.
TFTC - There is a life after the DMC, what's next for you ?
DJ Vajra - Well I'm actually doing another competition circuit run by Redbull and called the Three Styles and I'm going to be competing in the USA national final on november 10th in Las Vegas. So pretty much when I'll get back, I'm going to take a couple of day to rest my body, I have really beaten myself up pretty hard preparing this set. It's a physically demanding and mentally demanding set and I've been honnestly hurting myself. So I'm going to give my arms and my shoulders a rest for like maybe three or four days and then I'm going to be right back on Earth and be ready for Three Styles, that's the next thing.
TFTC - I was thinking about studio stuff also, anynything new this way ?
DJ Vajra - Basically I'm hoping to be able to continue the battle until the end of the year, if everything goes well in the Three Styles. And after this is over, I definitely want to get back into doing more productions and have a vision for a live set that I really have wanted to do for a very long time. I just hope that I give myself in a position where I can actually get outta there and do it !
TFTC - Can we expect to see your 6 minutes set on a video in a few days ?
DJ Vajra - I was in the online battle, for the DMC online championship, and I had a set, the exact same set that I did in New York and basically the same I'm going to do tomorow, but I didn't put it up because I didn't want to give away my set before the world final. But I think when I'll get back, I'll probably put it up for everybody check it out. A lot of people sent me email asking me "when can I see the set ?" so as soon as this battle is over ... yeah it's going to be the next thing !
TFTC - So we just have to follow your website ?
DJ Vajra - Yes, there is going to be a constant flow of new material so just check out the www.djvajra.com. At this point everything I ever done is up online and it's available for free. So check it out and download it for free if you like it and if you don't ... then maybe you'll like the next stuff !

Tales From The Crate - C'est ton grand retour dans le circuit DMC n'est-ce pas ?
DJ Vajra - C'est exact, cela fait sept ans depuis ma dernière participation à une compétition DMC. La première fois que j'ai essayé, je me suis arrêté à la finale USA, c'est donc la première fois que je représente les États-Unis à la finale mondiale.
TFTC - Justement, qu'a donné la finale USA cette année ?
DJ Vajra - La finale US cette année à New York était vraiment dingue, avec un très très haut niveau et de grands DJ's. Pour moi ça a vraiment été un honneur de me hisser à la tête de la compétition au milieu de si grands participants.
TFTC - Tu ne participeras que demain, comment te sens-tu à la veille de la compétition ?
DJ Vajra - J'ai beaucoup de respect pour tous les DJ's qui participeront demain. On est à peu près tous potes à présent et je suis loin de me sentir effrayé ou ennuyé par qui que ce soit. Ce n'est pas comme ça que j'approche le championnat. Pour moi c'est plus ... tu sais, je pense juste à la façon dont je vais faire mon six minutes, c'est vraiment la seule chose qui compte, sans penser à ce que les juges ou n'importe qui d'autre va penser. Simplement faire ce que j'ai envie de faire et essayer d'offrir un bon show au public.
TFTC - DJ Unkut a du abandonner pour des raisons médicales. Pas mal de monde attendait pourtant la rencontre de vos deux styles si différents. Et toi, pas trop déçu ?
DJ Vajra - C'est sûr que la présence de Unkut a été une grande source de motivation pour moi et je comprends que beaucoup de gens soient excités à l'idée de nous voir nous rencontrer. Moi autant que les autres d'ailleurs. Bien sûr que je suis déçu par le fait qu'il ne fasse finalement pas partie de la compétition mais je lui souhaite avant tout le meilleur pour sa santé et son rétablissement.
Heureusement je pense que nos routes se croiseront à nouveau bientôt ...
TFTC - Tu entretiens toujours un style très classic Hip Hop là où de nombreux DJ's versent dans un son plus électronique, y a-t-il quelque chose qui te déplaît dans la musique électro ?
DJ Vajra - Non, j'aime beaucoup la musique électronique ! Bien sûr j'ai grandi en écoutant du Hip Hop depuis que je suis môme, c'est une grande part de mon style et ça le sera toujours. Mais je m'intéresse aussi beaucoup à l'Electro. Quand je mixe, je joue beaucoup d'Electro House, de Dubstep ou d'autres choses comme ça. Tu sais, cette année j'ai inclus pas mal de sonorités électronique dans mon set, au même titre que le Hip Hop, le Funk, le Rock et tous les autres genres que l'on me connait. Je suis content que cette année mon set soit vraiment une combinaison de toutes les influences musicales dans lesquelles je baigne, le tout en six minutes.
TFTC - Il y a une vie après les DMC, quelle est la suite pour toi ?
DJ Vajra - Je participe en ce moment à une autre compétition, le RedBull Three Styles. Je participe à la finale nationale US le 10 novembre à Las Vegas. L'idée c'est qu'à mon retour je prenne quelques jours pour me reposer car j'ai vraiment travaillé dur pour préparer le set de demain. C'est un travail très exigeant, autant physiquement que mentalement et je ne me suis vraiment pas épargné. Je vais donc offrir un peu de repos à mes bras et mes épaules pendant trois ou quatre jours et quand ce sera fait, alors je serai prêt pour le Three Styles, c'est le prochain objectif.
TFTC - Je pensais aussi à la production, du nouveau de ce coté-là ?
DJ Vajra - Pour l'instant j'espère surtout pouvoir tenir les compétitions jusqu'à la fin de l'année, si tous se passe bien au RedBull Three Styles. Une fois que tout ça sera terminé, je veux vraiment retourner à la production, j'ai en tête un projet de set live que j'aimerai mettre en place depuis très longtemps. J'espère juste que ce sera le bon moment pour sortir un peu de tout ça et m'y coller pour de bon !
TFTC - Peut-on espérer profiter de ton 6 minutes en vidéo d'ici quelques jours ?
DJ Vajra - J'ai participé au championnat DMC online pour lequel j'avais filmé un set, exactement le même que celui que j'ai fait à New York et à peu près le même que celui que tu verras demain. Mais je ne l'ai pas laissé en ligne parce que je ne voulais pas me dévoiler avant la finale mondiale. Je pense que dès que je serai rentré aux États-Unis, je prendrai le temps de le remettre en ligne pour que tout le monde puisse en profiter. J'ai reçu beaucoup de demandes autour de la possibilité de voir ce set et dès que le battle sera terminé ... oui ce sera la première chose à faire !
TFTC - On a donc juste à surveiller ton site internet ?
DJ Vajra - Oui, on y trouve un flux constant de nouveautés, tu n'as qu'à surveiller le www.djvajra.com. Pour l'instant, tout ce que j'ai toujours fait s'y trouve disponible en ligne gratuitement. Vas voir, télécharge si ça te plaît et sinon ... peut-être aimeras-tu le prochain truc !
